Canadian Council of Imams: Statement Regarding the 2025 Federal Election

The Canadian Council of Imams urges all eligible Muslim voters to participate in the upcoming federal election—a pivotal moment for our community and our country.

The Council emphasizes that:

1. In these critical times, voting is a moral responsibility. As Muslims, we are called to uphold truth, justice, equity, and good governance. Participating in the electoral process can be an important way to pursue these values.

.

2. Voting in the Canadian federal election is not Haram. Indeed, the vast majority of Islamic scholars—especially those familiar with the Canadian and Wester context—agree that voting is not only permissible, but often encouraged as a form of civic engagement inline with Islamic objectives.

3. Abstaining from voting does not serve the interests of Islam or Muslims at this time. It sidelines our voices and gives space to those who wish to harm us. Even simply showing up to vote matters. Political parties can see who voted, not how they voted. A strong turnout sends a clear message: Our presence matters, and our Voices must be heard.

4. Supporting a candidate does not make a voter morally responsible for every decision that person makes while in power. However, voters must speak to and advise against any evil or wrongdoing with wisdom and good counsel

5. We call upon all Canadian Muslims to increase their du‘aa (supplication), istightar (seeking Allah's forgiveness), and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) at this critical time for us and our country. Allah is ultimately in control. We must try our best and leave for Allah the rest.

Furthermore, we acknowledge that Canada's electoral system is not without flaws and can present challenges for conscientious voters. We advise voters to choose principled candidates best positioned to minimize harm and promote positive change while considering the likely impact of their vote.

We recognize the growing disillusionment and voter apathy, particularly among our youth. To them, we say: We hear your concerns and recognize your power to bring about positive change. We urge young Muslims to participate and seek wisdom from elders. Itis through this intergenerational unity that we will gain strength, Insha Allah.

May Allah 2 bless us with leaders who govern with justice and compassion, and make our country a land of peace and dignity for all.
