Photo credit: http://chattahbox.comOn 21 October 2010, the government introduced Bill C-49 titled “Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada’s Immigration System Act”. Despite its name, the bill has attracted strong criticism from human rights groups who say that most of its provisions appear to target refugees, not smugglers. This is what a few lawyers and refugee rights activists have had to say:

“Measures keeping some refugees longer in detention, denying them family reunification and restricting their freedom of movement are likely in violation of the Canadian Charter and of international human rights obligations. People who are forced to flee for their lives need to be offered asylum and a warm welcome, not punished.”

- Wanda Yamamoto, President, Canadian Council for Refugees

Photo credit: http://muslimswearingthings.tumblr.com/“Hug a Muslim Today” was the first hand-held sign I saw upon arriving at the Rally to Restore Sanity, which was recently held on a beautiful autumn afternoon on the National Mall in Washington, DC. That sign set the tone for what was to come.

I’m a child of the 1960s, which was perhaps why the vibes at the rally felt so familiar. Although the crowd was estimated at around 200,000 people and it was difficult to hear or see what was happening on the stage, people were polite, peaceful and positive.

Referendum vote shows new vibrancy in Turkish democracyOn Sunday, September 12, 2010 Turkish voters approved changes to a military-era constitution in a referendum widely seen as a vote of confidence for the Erdogan government.

Ballot results showed majority support for the constitutional amendments, with 58 per cent in favour and 42 per cent against. Many see this as an important component of Turkey’s economic success under Mr. Erdogan’s leadership and a key element of the new dynamism emerging in Turkish domestic and foreign policy.

It is tragic that just when Pakistanis were gearing to celebrate the anniversary of their independence they were whammed by the worst natural disaster they've ever faced.

But, even without the disastrous floods, the people don't have a whole lot to celebrate. True, British Raj ended in 1947. But the authorities that replaced the foreign rulers pursued destructive policies and lined their own pockets. Their people's sufferings multiplied.
