The values, rituals and lifestyles of 1.6 billion Muslims around the globe were the subject of a study published last month by the Pew Research Center.
The study, called The World’s Muslims: Unity and Diversity, involved 38,000 face-to-face interviews in 39 countries. It included every country that has a Muslim population of more than 10 million, except those (such as China, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria) where political sensitivities or security concerns prevented opinion research among Muslims.

On a hot Saturday evening in May in a third-floor flat in Heliopolis, a suburb of Cairo, five young Egyptians huddle around a laptop: Noha, an NGO worker; Taimour, a politics student and volunteer; Dina, a news producer; Ahmed, a doctor; and Ali, a communications student. Drinks and nibbles lay on a table behind them as they eagerly wait for a Skype call from Tunisia.
Noha and her friends are taking part in a project called the “Virtual Dinner Guest”, created by Eric Maddox, a young filmmaker and conflict resolution graduate from New Mexico in the United States. The aim of the project is to connect people in the United States with the rest of the world through dinner-time Skype conversations.

Mississauga resident Dr. Farhan M. Asrar has been recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for his leadership skills.
Dr. Asrar, the chief resident medical doctor with McMaster University’s Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Family Medicine program, has been announced as the winner of the college’s 2012 Leadership Award.
The national award is given to a resident medical doctor that “has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills during their residency training, has encouraged the development of future leaders in medicine and has shown strong role modeling and mentorship ability among his peers.”

The Canadian government has announced that it will match donations made by Canadians to eligible charities responding to the crisis in Sahel, a sub-Saharan region of West Africa where more than 18 million people are facing food shortages.

Muslims Live, a new Montreal-based Ramadan radio show organized by the Muslim Association of Canada and the Muslim Students Association of Concordia, will be broadcasting live daily through the month of Ramadan at suhur time.
“Many Muslims in the community find themselves waking up like zombies during suhur, eating quickly and waiting with families in silence for fajr (dawn prayer),” says Razia Sultan Hamidi, who is spearheading the radio show.
