Muslim moms may be pleased to know that a new brand of baby food – halal baby food – is now out on the market.

Aimed at Muslim parents who want the convenience of prepared baby food without compromising their religious beliefs, Halal Yums, offers a selection of meals for babies and toddlers made with “100 per cent Canadian certified halal meat."

An added convenience is Halal Yums’ accessibility to mothers across the country. The company claims to be “Canada’s first online halal baby food store”.

Halal is an Arabic word meaning “clean”. Halal foods do not contain “haram”, or unclean, items such as pork or alcohol. In addition, all meat must have been slaughtered according to Islamic principles.

The unavailability of certified halal meat-based baby foods has often resulted in Muslim mothers delaying the switch from milk to solids or weaning their babies on a meat-less diet of egg custards and desserts, which could lead to children developing skin allergies such as eczema or suffering protein and iron deficiencies and anaemia.

Flavours offered by Halal Yums include: chicken, rice & corn, chicken oats & apple, pear & peach, and banana, apple & yogurt. According to Halal Yums’ website, the baby foods do not contain any preservatives or artificial colours and flavours, and are packaged in longer lasting vacuum wrappers instead of the typical baby food jars.
