Description
Ottawa Turkish Book Club
The inaugural meeting of the Ottawa Turkish Book Club was held on December 11, 2011 at the Val-des-Monts, Québec residence of Carol Bujeau and John Holmes (who is Canada's New Ambassador to Turkey). For our first book, ten participants discussed two selections from “Tales from the Expat Harem: foreign women in modern Turkey”, a non-fiction anthology by 32 expatriate women from seven nations. It was a wonderful opportunity to share insights and observations about Turkish culture and literature.
Meetings will be held on the last Tuesday of every month beginning in January. We will be reading fiction and non-fiction books in English, set in the Ottoman times and in modern Turkey, written by Turkish and non-Turkish authors, that offer insights into Turkey’s history, current affairs, people, culture, and relations with the world. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 31, at 7 pm at 26 Thorncliff Place in Nepean. We will be discussing “Yes, I would Love another Glass of Tea: an American Woman’s Letters to Turkey” by Katharine Branning, a series of imaginary letters written to Lady Mary Montagu, the wife of the English ambassador to Turkey from 1716-1718. If you are interested in joining our discussion group, just let us know so we can plan for numbers!
