May is Bike to Work Month in Ottawa. Cycling to work provides many health and environmental benefits. It increases the productivity of employees, and reduces rates of sickness-related absences. It is a key way to reduce our community’s emissions of greenhouse gases.

As if racial and religious profiling wasn’t enough of a problem for Muslims, now with the release of the federal government’s new counter-terrorism strategy which lists environmental groups as threats, Muslim environmentalists have it tough.

The newly published document from Public Safety Canada lists environmentalists under “issue-based domestic extremists” who could pose a threat to Canadians.

A thermal composite image (left) shows hotter areas in red and colder areas in purple. Heat escaping from poorly insulated parts of your home can lead to high energy use and hefty heating bills. Photo Credit: Omar MahfoudhiWinter is in full swing here in Ottawa, with anticipated “typical” cold weather. Being a La Niña year suggests we will have cold conditions for most of the winter with little respite. This means many people will retreat to the shelter of their homes, with climate controlled rooms, heated blankets, and electric fireplaces.

Unless you have heating included in your rent, you could be in for heavier than average bills this season. Or not.
